Folders: best practices

These best practices for folders (aka directories) are general, apply to all mail clients, including the web client.

Please note there are limitations in the number of folders/directories some mail clients can support, notably Microsoft Outlook.Limit the number of folders you use as much as practical

  • Limit nesting folders as much as practical (layering folders inside folders)
  • Do not include special characters in your names (such as @, apostrophes, or punctuation marks)
  • Limit name length as much as practical, and in any event, under 100 characters
  • Cloudiance zMailCloud webmail client: use filters and personas to automate filing and the identities used for your responses

Also due to different limitations by different service providers, it could cause difficulties during migrations between services if you violate any of these best practices.
